New Review: Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together

Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together

It took me forever and a day, but I finished my first play through of the remake of Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together.  I feel somewhat conflicted about it.  On the one hand it does an excellent job delivering a compelling and layered game play experience.  It does this to a fault though, making it difficult to access and enjoy by those who aren’t committed to its requirements.  I felt that it was challenging (in a positive way) on many levels, from its battles to its morally difficult questions about war.  If you can bear with it, you will be rewarded.  Final score: 2/3.

Weekly Links for August 13th (and then some)

Kaine, don't make eye contact with him. Just pretend we didn't see him.

Links

What I’ve Been Playing

  • Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together
I’m stuck in limbo with this game.  I enjoy playing it, but the game only drip feeds progress to me.  Some day I’ll just be exhausted with it.  In the mean time however, I’m getting my money’s worth out of my PSP.
  • Chrono Cross
I’m going to have to admit: I’m having a hard time sticking with this one.  I had no trouble diving into Chrono Trigger last summer, but Chrono Cross is proving to be a pain.
  • Minecraft
    Craft mines every day.
  • Left 4 Dead 2
    Dead Air campaign: complete.
  • El Shaddai
So does this guy get his superpowers from his jeans or what? I’ll bet they are expensive.

What I’ve Been Playing

  • Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together
I  know I’ve got the World Tarot which allows me to travel through the game at will, but I’m actually quite happy with the decisions I made thoughout the game.  Sorry Vyce!
  • Chrono Cross
Yasunori Mitsuda’s “Dimension Break” made me decide to find out how well this game has held up after ten years.
  • VVVVVV
I finally decided to pick up the third humble indie bundle, and VVVVVV is at the top of my list.
  • Minecraft
    Crafting mines.  Always.

New Review: Portal 2 (Plus Weekly Links)

A fine mess you've gotten us into, Orange.

Links

The links are scant this week.

So instead, I’ve finally finished my review on Portal 2.  While I enjoyed it, I felt like something was missing.  The transition from bonus game The Orange Box to it’s own triple-A title is awkward but entertaining none the less.

Final Score: 3/4

What I’ve Been Playing

  • Ms. ‘Splosion Man
I’m thinking about picking this up, but I’m not sure if I can make it through the game without Ms. ‘Splosion Man’s voice making me tear my hair out.
  • Bastion
I also played the demo for Bastion.  If the entire game is someone telling you what to do next then I think I will pass.
  • Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together
There’s a lot more I can do, but it’s becoming more trouble than it’s worth now that the main campaign is over.

Weekly Links for July 9th

Links

I don’t have much in the way of links this week, but there are a couple of blog posts highlighted by Critical Distance that I’d like to pass along.  The first being a post about Nier’s genre-bending.  The other takes a look at Goichi Suda’s “punk” design philosophy and how it’s shifted in Shadows of the Damned.

What I’ve Been Playing

  • Shadows of the Damned
I found myself playing a bit more of this after completing it.  I’m looking around for anything I might have missed the first time around and otherwise just trying out different strategies.
  • Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together
I’ve finally completed this game.  It clocked in at around 55 hours for me, and now that I’ve gotten the business of the main campaign out of the way, I’m beginning to experiment more with the other classes.  It’s been a test of endurance at times but I’ve enjoyed my time playing it.  Side note: if only the entire game was in the style of the video accompanying this post, maybe I wouldn’t see the characters as toddlers.  The weight of the game’s event is still felt, but the disconnect between issues like ethnic cleansing and cute little cartoons that march in place can feel a bit silly (at least when it comes to games being released in 2011.)
  • Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds
Sometimes, I just feel like I’m in an entirely different world when I play fighting games.  It’s the same feeling I have when I play sports games as well.  It’s like speaking a whole different language and having to read between the lines to be able to fully enjoy it.  Perhaps that how other gamers would feel about playing Tactics Ogre.
